How to choose a storage company?

What should you consider when choosing a storage company? Not all storage companies are the same, so make sure the provider you choose meets your specific needs and is a member of the Belgian Self Storage Association. Here are 10 things to consider when deciding where to store your goods:

1. BSSA members comply with European standards

There is a European standard for storage companies that specifies the minimum requirements for security and customer protection. All BSSA members must comply with this standard. The best way to check whether your chosen self-storage company complies with European standards is to check whether the company in question is a member of the Belgian Self Storage Association.

2. Your space, your key

Self-storage is about renting space to store your goods. Only you have access to your storage space. The site manager does not have access to your storage space unless you authorise him or someone else in writing. Your goods may not be stored together with other customers' goods in a communal area.

3. Adequate ventilation

Your own storage space must be adequately ventilated to prevent odours, moisture and mould from developing.

4. Security

Your goods must be stored in a secure environment. There should be at least CCTV at all entry and exit points and controlled access to the building. Most facilities also have additional security measures such as storage units with alarm systems and number plate recognition.

5. A legally binding contract

The storage industry is a self-regulating sector, so it is in your interest to have a clear contract between you and your storage provider. Among other things, this ensures that you retain your rights regarding access to your goods and, in particular, what happens to your goods if you do not pay your invoices on time.

6. Insurance

If your goods are worth storing, they are certainly worth insuring. An employee of the storage company can offer you the option of insuring your goods or refer you to a third party. The company itself also has appropriate insurance in case it is held liable for damage to your goods. It is very important that you take out insurance.

7. Access

Your storage space should be easily accessible, especially if you use it regularly. There should also be suitable loading and unloading areas. Most storage companies offer trolleys to help you place your goods in your storage space.

8. Access hours

Self-storage companies have different access hours. Not all companies offer 24/7 access to your goods. Some restrict access to evenings or weekends only. If you want to access your storage unit late at night, make sure this option is available before signing your contract.

9. Size of the storage space

Self-storage is all about flexibility, and most companies offer a wide range of storage spaces at different rates. Make sure your storage company has the right storage space for your needs. Some companies refer to cubic metres (m³) instead of square metres (m²). You should also take the ceiling height into account when measuring in m³. This is particularly important for storage units with high ceilings, as you may not be able to use this space. You should also consider whether you plan to regularly remove goods from the storage space, as it can be tempting to take a smaller storage space and fill it completely with goods, but this makes it much more difficult to remove your goods later on.

10. Staff

The self-storage facility should be staffed or at least have someone available by telephone to explain the contract to you and guide you through the security systems.
